There is no reliable universal number for every vacuum compressed sofa. The correct loading quantity depends on the packed carton dimensions, sofa design, compression ratio, loading method and the usable space inside the container. The safest approach is to calculate a planning estimate and then ask the manufacturer for a model-specific loading diagram.

To estimate how many compressed sofas fit in a 40HQ container:
Estimated quantity = usable container volume × loading efficiency ÷ packed CBM per sofa
Treat the result as a planning figure, not a guaranteed quantity. Final capacity should always be confirmed for the exact model and packaging specification.
CBM means cubic metres. Use the dimensions of the final export carton after compression—not the open sofa dimensions and not an early sample estimate.
Carton CBM = length (m) × width (m) × height (m)
For example, if a compressed sofa carton measures 1.10 m × 0.70 m × 0.45 m:
1.10 × 0.70 × 0.45 = 0.3465 CBM per carton
If one sofa is packed in two cartons, calculate both cartons and add their CBM. Ask whether legs, cushions, hardware and manuals are included in the quoted carton dimensions.
A container's published internal volume is not the same as the space that can be filled with rectangular furniture cartons. Door dimensions, wall shape, loading clearance and carton orientation all affect the actual result.
For initial purchasing calculations, use the container specification supplied by your freight forwarder. Then apply a loading-efficiency factor rather than assuming every cubic centimetre can be used.
Loading efficiency reflects how well the carton dimensions fit the container. It is affected by:
Identical rectangular cartons loaded directly on the container floor usually use space more efficiently than mixed cartons or palletized cargo. However, maximum theoretical density should never override safe handling and carton protection.
Assume the freight forwarder confirms 76 m³ as the planning volume for a particular 40HQ container, the supplier expects 85% loading efficiency, and each packed sofa occupies 0.3465 CBM.
76 × 0.85 ÷ 0.3465 = approximately 186 sofas

A foam-dominant modular sofa may compress differently from a sofa with a rigid frame, metal mechanism or large fixed arms.
Compression must not damage comfort or long-term shape recovery. A smaller carton is not automatically better if the foam cannot recover consistently after extended storage and transportation.
Detachable legs, cushions, armrests or backrests can improve carton efficiency, but they may add assembly steps and hardware-control requirements.
Thick pile fabrics, tufting and decorative details may need additional protection to prevent pressure marks, creases or abrasion.
A carton must survive stacking, warehouse handling and inland delivery. Reducing board strength to save a small amount of CBM can increase damage, claims and returns.
Floor loading normally maximizes the number of cartons in a container because no pallet volume is used. It can be suitable for full-container wholesale orders with unloading equipment and labour available at the destination.
Pallet loading may simplify forklift handling and warehouse receiving, but it normally reduces the number of sofas per container. Buyers should compare the freight saving against unloading time, labour cost, warehouse rules and product-protection needs.
Confirm the intended loading method before approving the quotation. A quantity calculated for floor loading should not be reused for a palletized shipment.
Once the estimated loading quantity is known, you can calculate the container-related freight allocation per unit:
Freight per sofa = total container logistics cost ÷ number of sofas loaded

Do not compare suppliers only by FOB unit price. A slightly higher-priced sofa with reliable recovery and a smaller tested carton may produce a better landed margin than a cheaper sofa with inefficient packaging.
